September 01, 2008:
Report on the Grandes Festas do Divino Espirito Santo da Nova Inglaterra in Fall River, Massachusetts!
For the first time in its 25 year history, the AFPC travelled to the United States and took part in one of the largest Portuguese Festivals in North America. The Grandes Festas do Divino Espirito Santo was held over 4 days starting on August 21. Our band had the opportunity to participate in both the "Cortejo e Desfile Etnografico" (Bodo de Leite) and the "Procissao da Coroacao" (Procession), which were both hard work but amazing to see and take part in. As well, the band performed two concerts, the first alongside the Sociedade Filarmonica dos Covoes Castenhede from Portugal and the second with the Banda Nossa Senhora da Luz from Fall River.
Our band not only performed very well but also proudly represented the AFPC, the Portuguese community in Calgary and Canada. It was also a pleasure to meet and cheer on our fellow Portuguese Bands from Canada; the Banda do Senhor Santo Cristo from Toronto, the Filarmonica Portuguesa de Montreal and the Filarmonica do Divino Espirito Santo from Laval who also participated in the Grandes Festas do Divino Espirito Santo.
Many thanks go to:
· Our musicians for performing and presenting themselves so well!!!
· Our family, friends and members who joined and supported us on this trip.
· The Fall River Sports Club, Fall River Grill Restaurant and Banda Nossa Senhora da Luz who provided meals to our band during our performance days.
· All of the volunteers from our band and board of directors who have worked very hard over the last year to make this trip possible. It will be a trip we will not soon forget!
July 23, 2008:
The AFPC would like to thank Kenny, Carlos, Mike and Rosa from the Lira do Divino Espirito Santo from London, Ontario, who visited our band this past weekend. Thank you also to Kenny and Mike for joining us at our rehearsal and concert, it was a pleasure to meet you and we look forward to meeting the rest of your band in the near future!
